Afaf Zurayk, born in Beirut in 1948, is a Lebanese-American artist and writer whose practice spans painting, poetry, and reflective prose. Working across media, she brings together gesture, language, and light to explore presence, memory, and the emotional terrain of the everyday. Zurayk studied Fine Arts at the American University of Beirut, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in 1970 and a Masters in Islamic Art from Harvard University in 1972. She went on to teach art history and studio practice at institutions including the Lebanese American University, the American University of Beirut, Georgetown University, and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC.
Rooted in quiet abstraction and philosophical inquiry, Zurayk’s work is marked by restraint, sensitivity, and an enduring engagement with the inner life. Over the decades, her practice has evolved across painting, drawing, and artist books, often pairing image with meditative text. While writing has become an increasingly present dimension of her work, it functions less as a separate pursuit than as an extension of the same reflective impulse that guides her art, offering moments of stillness, return, and resonance.
