Sama Alshaibi is a visual artist working with photography, video, performance, and installation. She was born in Basra, Iraq, in 1973 to a Palestinian-Iraqi family. During her early life, her family experienced a lot of displacement during the Iran-Iraq War. She grew up between the Middle East and the United States. These personal experiences inspired her themes such as exile, memory, and identity, often using her own image in her work.

Alshaibi received an MFA in Photography, Video, and Media Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is currently a Regents Professor at the University of Arizona, where she also co-directs the Racial Justice Studio. Her projects often involve research and address social, political, and environmental concerns.

She has shown her work internationally, including at the Venice Biennale in 2013, where she represented the Maldives, and at the Biennale of Contemporary Arab Photography in Paris. Her series Silsila documents landscapes across North Africa and West Asia, focusing on desert environments and threatened water sources.

In 2021, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography. She has also received support from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, the Art Matters Foundation, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Alshaibi lives and works in Tucson, Arizona.

This is a short biography. The full version, along with research, CV and sources will be posted soon. Stay tuned and visit us often or become a member to be notified of our updates.
