Event Date: 11/11/2015 - 31/12/2015
Location: Sharjah Art Museum
In the sixth edition of Lasting Impressions, Sharjah Art Museum proudly presents the prominent Egyptian artist George Bahgory.
Bahgory was born in 1932 in the village of Bahgora, Egypt. During more than 50 years of his artistic career, Bahgory became more than just the Grandfather of Caricature. He is also a painter, a sculptor, a novelist, a children books writer, and an actor.
Bahgory is mostly famous for his political satire, which people related and looked forward to in Al Ahram Newspaper. He is also known for reflecting popular Egyptian sentiments, like his many beautiful portrayals of the Egyptian legend, Um Kulthoum.
In 1949 Bohgory attended the school of Fine Arts in Cairo and he moved to Paris in 1969. He refers to his relocation to Paris as his rebirth, and his 35 years of freedom. His background as an Upper Egypt Villager and the time he spent in France created the brilliant artist that he is today, in addition to his talent and knowledge in different artistic disciplines. Bahgory’s art is a very unique combination of classic and contemporary art with a comical twist.
In his retrospective, we present to you more than 90 works, some date back to the 1950s when he was a student, until his latest works, in different range of mediums. We hope to not only present the artworks of the artist George Bahgory, but also the story of the remarkable humble human being that he is.
