IBRAHIM EL DESSOUKI, Egypt (1969)
Bio
Born in 1969 in Cairo, Ibrahim El Dessouki comes from an artist’s family whom the parents, Fahmi El Dessouki and Atyat Sayed, are well-known for their expressionist works. Tackling a variety of themes like landscapes, animals, or still-lives, he focused his practice on reflecting the essence and the authenticity of Egypt. El Dessouki employs diverse materials like pigments, charcoal, or pastel and outlines with shades and light, the portraits of women such as the singer Um Kulthum. Through this significant figure of the Egyptian culture, he observes the idea of nostalgia that he would convey with profound expressions. Thus, he combines his knowledge of the portraiture from the Pharaonic or Coptic tradition, and his studies on the paintings of the Western artists Lucien Freud or Francis Bacon. Ibrahim El Dessouki is based and works in Cairo.
