A candid interview with writer, artist and educator Mahi Binebine.
Born in 1959 in Marrakech, a major city in the northwest African nation of Morocco, Mahi Binebine went to live in Paris in 1980 to continue his studies in mathematics, which he taught for eight years. He then devoted himself to writing and painting. His novels have been translated into a dozen languages. In 2012, one of his novels, "Horses of God", was made into a film of the same name and was an official selection at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.. Many argue, however, that his paintings provide the more visceral framing of his ideas. Hauntingly dreamlike, his paintings often depict shadowy silhouettes of humans forms emerging from red and blue backgrounds, suggesting both the fragility and power of humans. His paintings hold an important place in contemporary Moroccan and North African art. Mahi emigrated to New York from 1994 to 1999 and his paintings are part of the permanent collection at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He returned to Marrakech in 2002 where he currently lives and works.
In December, Mahi was the featured artist for Business for the Arts of Broward as part of their "Arts Mean Business" breakfast series at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale.
