About the Artist:
The painter and sculptor George Bahgoury is among the most celebrated contemporary Egyptian artists.
Born in Luxor in 1932, he began work as a political cartoonist in 1953. The artist then went on to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek in 1955, under the guidance of Egyptian artist Hussein Bikar. In 1970, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, in Paris, where he has been living for over 35 years.
Among his various influences, the painter cites renowned twentieth century artist Pablo Picasso, Egyptian modernist Abdel Hadi Al Gazzar, German expressionist Paul Klee, and Egyptian Fayoum portraits.
His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world, including the Louvre museum in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Amman and the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo.
Bahgoury is also a caricaturist for Al Ahram Weekly.
