SAAD HASSANI, Morocco (1948)
Bio
Born in 1948 in Rabat, Saad Hassani didn’t study art or train in any institution, but he manifested a real talent for painting at a very young age. It is through his encounters with the artists from the École de Casablanca that Hassani would complete his formation. And also, he would take benefits from his trips in Europe to visit galleries, museums discovering the movements of the École de Paris, the abstract expressionists, and so. In 1997, he settled at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and researched the theme of the chessboard and its figurines. In parallel, he was commissioned to execute public works and often monumental like the sail of 220m2 on the occasion of the universal exhibition of Lisbon in 1998. In his art, Saad Hassani distances himself from conventional and realistic painting and pays more attention to the construction and the colors of the compositions. He assembles the abstract motifs and creates strata of colors rendering a mysterious universe. Saad Hassani lives and works in Casablanca.
